This is a good quality 6" Rumak-Maksutov telescope. The Rumak optical design allows better field correction and smoother optical surfaces than a standard Maksutov. Read the full Altair Astro 150 Maksutov Review in Astronomy Now Magazine 2010 (new window, PDF format). Standard Maksutovs use the rear surface of the front meniscus lens to form the secondary mirror by adding a silvered spot. The secondary mirror of a "Rumak" telescope uses separate secondary mirror which has a different curvature to the meniscus lens. The result gives the optician better control over the optical surfaces, resulting in a flatter field, and less spherical aberration. It's rare to find such optical quality in a Maksutov or Cassegrain at this price.

Choosing a mount: The Altair Astro Mak 150 telescope is the perfect size for the iOptron Minitower GOTO mount, with is superb tracking accuracy, fast setup and easy to use 130K object library. We used the Mak 150-1800 on our Minitower with great results. If you order a Minitower with this scope you get £50 off the package - simply choose the menu option below!

Optical performance: We've used this scope extensively. The optics are smooth and well corrected, and contrast is very high. The 1800mm focal length means you get high power views of the planets, and the Moon as well as galaxies and globular clusters. Simply divide the focal length in mm (1800mm) by the focal length of your chosen eyepiece to work out what magnification the scope will provide. We demonstrated this telescope to our customers at Kelling Heath Starparty on Saturn, the Moon, Mars and Venus, as well as numerous deep sky objects. We've been observing Jupiter's cloud belts change from hour ot hour, and we've had some very nice views of globular star clusters, planetary nebulae, and galaxies. The optics are the best value for the price we have ever seen in a Maksutov and the 6" aperture gives good resolution and light gathering ability while the size of the tube remains well within the range for portability. What's more, the focuser is a delight to use and it's easy to achieve a sharp focus quickly. Observers who tried the Mak 150-1800 at the April 2010 Kelling Heath Starparty were amazed when we told them the price, fully expecting to pay twice as much for a Rumak design. Because Altair Astro work directly and independently with the opticians, we keep prices affordable, whilst having direct control over optical quality and specification. That way you're assured of the best possible optical performance for your money. Read the full Altair Astro 150 Maksutov Review in Astronomy Now Magazine 2010 (new window, PDF format).
We recommend the Altair 2" Dielectric Diagonal and Altair 20mm 70 Degree FOV Eyepiece with this telescope.
