Fast focal length Newtonian of larger apertures can suffer from rigidity problems which affect collimation due to the weight of the mirrors. What's more, tube currents often affect large Newtonian telescopes, especially those with solid tubes.

We have customers who like the idea of large aperture Newtonian imaging, yet are frustrated with the "aperture gap" in the market. This product is designed with these customers in mind.

So, if you want a faster focal ratio Newtonian which can be mounted on a GOTO EQ mount for wide field imaging of both planets and deep sky objects, plus visual observing, then this could be the right scope for you.

In early 2014, we asked our esteemed optical suppliers for a rigid truss-tube chassis to house their world renowned Newtonian optics in an imaging-friendly format.

CAD drawings went back and forth with a resulting design agreed.

The design objectives were as follows:

1) A scope which is more rigid than a carbon fibre or metal tube, in order to maintain collimation. A triangulated truss and strut design achieves this objective.

2) An open tube design to encourage maximum air flow, reducing tube currents to negligible levels, and allowing fast cool-down. Air flows through the shroud which covers the truss tube assembly, but dust light and dew are not a problem.

3) To put as little stress on the mount as possible by employing light-weight low expansion composite materials, and to reduce the effects of expansion and contraction. Carbon fibre has a very low coefficient of expansion, and is the perfect material for the job.

5) A large aperture mirror system allowing maximum field illuminatio for imaging.

6) Affordable to mere mortals. We all want good results without having to take out a second mortgage.

Beta testing has been very encouraging. This product should ship in solid form in Q3 2015 (it's about 6-8 months later than expected - but with some nice enhancements well worth the wait.
